As an Aristo-Chic woman of action I know how to get things done. I know how to make things happen. It’s what I do. If I want something, I find a way. Seems quite simple to me really. It doesn’t occur to me that I would have barriers in my way. If I did then I would assume then that wasn’t for me – heigh-ho and move along to the buzz of the next goal. That’s not to say I give in, I merely rely on instinct to know whether it was worth fighting for or not and it has worked for me every time.
They say be careful what you wish for and this has been true on many an occasion in my life, however each event has provided me with an opportunity to better myself and my life and for that I am eternally grateful. Humility is a magic word and one that should feature more prominently in each of our lives. I know and I fully admit to being superficial and pretentious on occasion, however whoever is looking after me up there always provides me with an opportunity to bring me crashing back down to earth should I forget the H word.
So gosh, did I feel like I had been hit by a bus sideways when I found myself between contracts [spoiler alert: it was only two months, but it felt like a lifetime]. As a consultant, this happens and you make provisions for it financially. What it doesn’t prepare you for is the loss of daily mental stimulation.
As a proactive person I made a list and structured my days of forthcoming and impending leisure time to ensure I used them to the maximum effect. Here is a snapshot of my Aristo-Chic five step Refind My Buzz action plan:
Step One: Set your vision – where do you want to be
Step Two: Write out what success would look like.
Step Three: Set yourself one goal a day
Step Four: Give yourself a timeline
Step Five: Make yourself fabulous !
I shan’t bore you with the whole detailed plan, needless to say that, had I stuck to the schedule I would now be speaking more than passable Japanese coupled with arguably fabulous Russian – always useful to have a couple of languages under one’s belt (!), and I would be able to rival Dame Mary Berry with cupcakes that the Primrose set would be rugby tackling me for.
Shockingly what actually happened was monumentally different. I hadn’t realised how much I identified with my job. It defined who I was – still does to some extent, except now I allow it to be a more balanced part of my life. The very act of refocusing on something other than trying to find my next assignment, created space and helped generate momentum in my life again. Which in turn brought the next idea of who to call and who to connect with. It’s amazing how one small action can have such a multiple ripple effect.
Start somewhere. Anywhere. Just start. You can do this ! Xx
