How to ask for a pay-rise the Aristo-Chic effortless way

Super easy.  ALERT: Jargon warning. You need to write a business case. Fancy words, but this will get you to be taken seriously. Decide on why you want the raise. Sounds like a no brainer, but it could be more money, a promotion, more responsibility, a title so you can then use it on your CV for the next job.

The actual way to kick this off professionally can be as simple as a one pager (all the words on one side of A4 paper) and should contain the following headlines:

Purpose: Request for a discussion to consider a pay increase for XX
Timing: Within the next month
Recommendations: That you review the content of this paper and confirm a follow up meeting time
Background: The company is currently experiencing X problem
Proposed solutions: This issue can be resolved by X undertaking the role of XX, which will resolve the issue by. has been doing the role of XX for XX years.
Risks and Mitigations: There are no perceived risks to this discussion and subsequent promotion.
Benefits: With the added responsibility of XX, X person will be able to increase sales by XX, add value to the team by X
Next Steps: Confirm diary availability for a follow up session. Diaries currently indicate you have availability on XX date.

Take ALL emotion out of this discussion. This is a business transaction. Pretend you are doing this for your bet friend if it helps you remove the ‘feelings’ part of this.

Your plan A is that you will get the meeting and get the promotion. Plan B is you will look for another job.

Enact Plan B as you are writing the business case, this eliminates any feeling of desperation from your business case and approach generally and ALSO ensures you feel more confident because you know your skills are valuable to other people out there.
Your personality and skill set is valuable !!! Always remember this. Someone will be willing to recognise this and pay you for it at the level you deserve.

Still got hesitations? Start small. Start somewhere. Just write a draft version of the business case.

The when you are ready, send an email to the right person asking for a quick meeting on your future with the company. When the meeting is set up, send the business case document for pre-reading to the recipient prior to the meeting and add a short agenda into the calendar invite:

Achievements to date (be clear on the ABOSULTE AWESOME value you bring to the role currently),

Future development and growth opportunities within the company,

Remuneration (fancy word for ‘pay’) conversation.

Then hit SEND !! Tooooo exciting. Go draft that business case. You are worth it !! Xx
