I am sat here in a new swanky café just catching up on some of the many projects I have running simultaneously – the idea being that coffee would bring me that nudge I needed to put some structure into the sprawl of creative chaos swirling in my mind, day and night.
And I am reminded of a killer question I was once asked about my work:
Do you find it expansive or draining?
Instinctively, without hesitation, I could firmly respond that my creative projects bring me joy. But the last consultancy role I did, I found draining. With hindsight, it was because of the culture of the organisation not being compatible with the way I work best. This was a real eye-opener for me, as to secure that particular assignment I had to go through so many hoops to meet the security clearance requirements. They say the grass is greener on the other side. I can confirm that I have seen the other side now, I am grateful for the experience and what it taught me, and I no longer feel the need to go back. Normally I love my consultancy work, it gives me a real buzz professionally. Whereas my creative projects give me a more wholistic expansive (literally makes my insides feel alive and growing) feeling.
What in your work brings you joy and what drains you? Can you do more of the first and outsource the second? Or do you need a job review refresh?
So many people settle for accepting that the job is just like that. It doesn’t have to be. Be bold. Don’t settle for ‘it’s ok’, look for the ‘expansive’ elements to your job and visualise yourself in a role where you do a lot more of that, hear yourself saying the words: Universe, bring me more of this please. You’ve got this. Be bold. Be fearless. Xx
