I’m hearing lots of chatter around lately about a sluggish [work] market, redundancies, fewer interim assignments etc. This can feel like a downward spiral if you are caught in this negative talk. The reality is that factually more millionaires are made during a recession, and data shows that work was abundantly available during the pandemic. THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY. [Repeat] ALWAYS.
Realistically, I get it, positive self-talk won’t pay the bills immediately whilst you are stalking people on LinkedIn, talking to yet another recruiter etc… but you can do some pragmatic things to keep you going, build or maintain momentum, keep you focussed and moving forwards instead of wallowing or adopting a fudge what do I do attitude ?!
Here’s a quick guide to what I found helpful during quieter work periods:
- Be active on LinkedIn. Be Open to Work. Start following the industry forums chatter to keep up to date. Comment on the posts you find interesting. This momentum will generate activity. You are actively engaging. DO NOT BE in Wait mode. This is a negative place to be. Be in Active mode.
- Monitor your financial outgoings – reduce it down to essentials only.
- Talk to HMRC or whoever else you need to make sure there is flexibility in timelines for payments.
- Do positive things – 5 mins of yoga, 5 mins of meditation, scripting, visualise yourself in your new role, visualise money appearing in your bank account each month. Feel, See, Hear, Smell it – how it is once you have the new scenario.
- Take one inspired work action every day (this can often be a numbers game, so apply for as many roles as possible – even if it is just for the interview experience), talk to recruiters, develop a pipeline (a list on your NOTES on iPhone saying which agents/roles are currently in play- then DETACH from the outcome.)
Every time you feel like your internal chatter is going down a rabbit hole, then pause, and replace with a quick easy mantra to redirect your neurons. One that works for me is “All is well. Everything is working out for my higher self. I am safe.” Neuroplasticity is AWESOME. It is like muscle memory, keep repeating the same things and gradually you will raise your vibration and start to take inspired action.
You’ve got this. Xx
